Getting Fish off the Hook

Past ECI initiatives have successfully pushed back against cruel fishing tactics, particularly practices of hunting sharks for their fins. In this vein, our initiative aims to reduce the number of fish being pointlessly fininshed off when fishing vessels are forced to dump their excess catches due to fishing quota laws.

In order to tackle this problem, we aim to create an initiative where vessels with catches above their quota can donating the excess stocks to food banks. In return, they will receive credit from the government.

This will enshore that these fish stocks do not go to waste, will compensate fishermen for their extra work, feed the hungry and tip the scales towards equity and away from waste.

Stop the invasion: A data-driven strategy against invasive species in the Mediterranean | European Citizens' Initiative Forum

I recommend taking a look at other topics related to "maritime" management.

Although good will is evident, such a practice would encourage not to put back into the sea the surplus of fishing... But fishing even more against what are the "sustainable" principles of some rules, absurdly we should build a sustainable fishing system that "unfavors fishing".

Creating a "new market" that is social and ethical or not, will increase the consumption of fish resources.

The real problem of fisheries-related degradation is the shadow economy and lack of traceability, which dramatically increases costs, waste and impact on the environment. Many nations derive a fraction of their profits from fish trade. Unfortunately, the profits generated by fishing activities are often evaded and dispersed.
