The developed world continues to impose commerce duties on exports coming from poor countries while they claim to increase development aid. In our globalized world, the best development aid that Europe can give to poor regions is to totally open its markets to their products. Local producers must focus more on sectors and activities of higher added value where Europe can have a competitive advantage. Current commerce duties slow down the economical transition that Europe needs, avoid poor countries from achieving higher living standards without external aid and in a sustainable way, and prevent European citizens from accessing to cheaper products.
Note: I do know that, for example, EU is the main trading partner of Africa, but we are far from supress all duties on exports coming from poor countries.
