We recommend that the Commission reduce the restriction on Asylum Seekers access to employment during the asylum process.
Currently, this has been reduced from 9 months to 6 months, highlighting that this topic is already gaining traction within the European Community. This timeline remains too restrictive. Therefore, we propose that this is removed altogether.
Asylum Seekers are currently left in poverty, struggling to survive and provide for their families for unnecessary lengths of time. Enabling Asylum seekers to work would greatly assist in the overall integration process of asylum seekers into their host communities. Adults, children, families and the wider community would benefit from this employment. This specifically applies to Member States who have been disproportionately affected by high levels of immigration. By allowing Asylum Seekers to work, local governments would benefit from additional taxes created which in turn can help community infrastructure.
