Chick This Out:
We propose the ending of the practice of "Chick Culling". This process usually involves maceration or gassing, resulting in the mass killing of millions of animals annually. In the European Union alone, an estimated 330 million male chicks were killed annually until recently. Every year, the poultry industry kills around 6.5 billion newly hatched male chicks and female ducklings worldwide.
Fragmented EU rules risk outsourcing culling to less-regulated countries, shifting, not solving, the problem. Certain EU Member States have already banned the practice, but this ban is not Union wide.
However, bans may push male chicks into low-welfare rearing or export for slaughter, minimum welfare standards are essential. This outlines the need for clearly defined minimum welfare standards for male chicks.
Ethical Time Window pressure (Day 7) clashes with scientific consensus (Day 13), firm advocacy for the Day 7 limit is needed.
