Supress all duties on exports to the EU coming from poor countries

The developed world continues to impose commerce duties on exports coming from poor countries while they claim to increase development aid. In our globalized world, the best development aid that Europe can give to poor regions is to totally open its markets to their products. Local producers must focus more on sectors and activities of higher added value where Europe can have a competitive advantage. Current commerce duties slow down the economical transition that Europe needs, avoid poor countries from achieving higher living standards without external aid and in a sustainable way, and prevent European citizens from accessing to cheaper products.

Note: I do know that, for example, EU is the main trading partner of Africa, but we are far from supress all duties on exports coming from poor countries.

Thank you for raising the issue and sharing this idea on our platform.

Are you aware of the steps to follow to draft and register a European Citizens’ Initiative? Are you currently looking for partners and/or for further developments of your idea?

Please note that you can find useful information and guidance notes in the LEARN section of the Forum, especially in terms of procedural steps or tips to draft an initiative (https://collab.ec.europa.eu/wiki/eci/display/ECI/Learn).

If you are looking for partners to form a citizens’ committee, make sure you check out the CONNECT section of the Forum (https://collab.ec.europa.eu/wiki/eci/display/ECI/Connect). Here, you can search the database, identify users committed to your same cause and contact them to be potential co-organisers for your initiative or even for advice.

Let us draw your attention to the existence of EU policies on the issue you are raising, such as the Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP). The GSP  allows vulnerable developing countries to pay fewer or no duties on exports to the EU, giving them vital access to the EU market and contributing to their growth. Please find more information following this link: http://ec.europa.eu/trade/policy/countries-and-regions/development/generalised-scheme-of-preferences/

If you have already started to draft an initiative/(running an initiative) and are looking for advice (whether legal advice, or advice on campaigning, fundraising, communicating, or other aspects), check out the SEEK ADVICE section of the Forum in order to receive tailor-made feedback on your proposed initiative (https://collab.ec.europa.eu/wiki/eci/display/ECI/Seek+advice).
