Get the plastic out of the waters. With a huge fishingboat/plant

According to the UN in the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans then fish. This is toxic for animals and humans. Some plastic is on the surface of the water, a lot of it is floating and a part is on the seafloor.About 40% is fishingnets!

In all cases we have to catch it, dry it and then burn it in a special oven.Without drying it will not burn. We will dry it under the sun on the (slippery)deck and even by the heat coming from the oven,On a conveyor belt in the ship.

In the picture we see as an example an old aircraftcarrier with cranes to put the plastic and debris on deck from the fishingboats, to dry. After some time it will be transported to the oven to be burned at very high temperature. Smoke will be filtered.Fisherboats will bring in the garbage but we might also adjust the big boat with trawls itself so it becomes a giant fishingboat.(trawling is a method of fishing that involves actively dragging or pulling a trawl through the water behind one or more trawlers. Trawls are fishing nets that are pulled along the bottom of the sea or in midwater at a specified depth). We can use smaller boats to clean rivers.

This has to be a joined strike effort with the Navy and civilians working closely together supported by governements, international organisations and donors and volunteers.

We have to stop the influx (90% from only ten rivers) now and the clean up for years.

ALSO THE USE OF POLY LACTIC ACID AS A PLASTIC WOULD HELP A LOT. YOU CAN EVEN COMPOST IT!

Together we can do this! What are your ideas?

It's a great idea and it's already developed and under testing. https://www.theoceancleanup.com/

I've worked on this problem for some time and it’s not easy.

The biggest difficulty is to design a system of collection throughout the ocean which can differentiate between plastic scrap and organic material including fish.

If this problem isn't solved then such an activity will arguably do more harm than good with the disruption of the ecosystem.

Building a mobile collection system to extract plastic from the ocean is possible and unlike the 'Oceancleanup' boom method it must track and follow the accumulations of plastic which are constantly on the move around the various gires.

Once such a separation method is developed (I’ve got a strong hypothesis) then it’s necessary to duplicate this activity not just by many but by thousands of collection ships to make any sort of difference to this problem. It’s established fact that the ocean contains trillions of pieces of plastic ranging from large tangled balls more than one meter across down to microscopic balls only couple of microns across. The density of this plastic in the oceans waters can be measured from Parts per Billion (ppb) down to Parts per thousand (ppt) at the most concentrated. Consequently, any method must traverse kilometers of ocean to encounter and collect even kilos of floating plastic.

By any measurement the size of the problem overwhelms the current proposals to treat it. I suspect that a biological solution should hold more promise all things considered than any mechanical collection.

Thank you for raising the issue and sharing this idea on our platform.

Are you aware of the steps to follow to draft and register a European Citizens’ Initiative? Are you currently looking for partners and/or for further developments of your idea?

Please note that you can find useful information and guidance notes in the LEARN section of the Forum, especially in terms of procedural steps or tips to draft an initiative (https://collab.ec.europa.eu/wiki/eci/display/ECI/Learn).

If you are looking for partners to form a citizens’ committee, make sure you check out the CONNECT section of the Forum (https://collab.ec.europa.eu/wiki/eci/display/ECI/Connect). Here, you can search the database, identify users committed to your same cause and contact them to be potential co-organisers for your initiative or even for advice.

Similar ideas were brought up on this Forum. Would you like to discuss them with the concerned user(s) in the comment section or contact the author using the CONNECT section? You can find the discussions here:

Let us draw your attention to the existence of EU policies on the issue you are raising, such as the EU Plastics Strategy (https://ec.europa.eu/commission/news/eu-plastics-strategy-2018-nov-20_en) or the vote of the European Parliament to ban single-use plastic items (http://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20181018IPR16524/plastic-oceans-meps-back-eu-ban-on-throwaway-plastics-by-2021).

If you have already started to draft an initiative and are looking for advice (whether legal advice, or advice on campaigning, fundraising, communicating, or other aspects), check out the SEEK ADVICE section of the Forum in order to receive tailor-made feedback on your proposed initiative (https://collab.ec.europa.eu/wiki/eci/display/ECI/Seek+advice).

If you have reached the stage to be ready to register an initiative, the Official Register of the European Citizens’ Initiative might be more adapted to your request: http://ec.citizens-initiative.europa.eu/public/how-to-register.
