The European Citizens’ Initiative Forum is already available for anyone to propose ideas for new initiatives. The online collaborative platform offers an open space to connect, debate, share experiences and build networks with citizens who are passionate about similar issues.
Open to ideas
To date, seven ideas for initiatives have been proposed on the Forum’s discussion page, with varying degrees of interaction, support from other users, and sophistication. Some ideas aim to increase awareness of the EU and bring it closer to its citizens.
These include a proposal to ‘Enhance, allow and promote the use of the EU flag’, which calls for greater use of the flag alongside or replacing Member States’ flags; or another to change the EU motto from “united in diversity” to “the European Union united”, in a bid to bring the institutions closer to their citizens.
Although not all ideas may qualify as citizens’ initiatives as they stand, they are open for debate to be further developed. Voice your opinion!
Have your say
Other ideas posted on the Forum are more detailed and seek to build an EU-wide network of supporters as well as potential organisers, such as the proposal on “Full political rights for citizens on the move”. Another idea already boasts a fully-fledged draft European Citizens’ Initiative calling for a ‘general right’ to vote for citizens across Europe beyond local and European elections. The initiative asserts that such rights would enhance European democracy while giving the EU a more important role in elections. What do you think? Join the conversation.
You will also find ideas regarding taxing trading in consumer attention; on putting deposits on all consumer products to encourage a new sorting industry to emerge and moving towards a real circular economy; and on the ultimate levelling of all wages, pensions and social welfare across EU Member States to help reduce discrimination, deprivation and help the disadvantaged.
If you are interested in any of these proposals and would like to share your thoughts – or put forward some of your own ideas – then visit the Forum and register as a user. Be part of the conversation and share your ideas now!
